San Diego-based International Relief Teams works to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and disaster around the globe, from the forgotten corners of the world to right here at home, by sending volunteer teams and medical supplies to improve the lives of those who suffer most. We have some great opportunities this summer, both locally and abroad, for volunteer photographers and storytellers. This is a grate opportunity for a photographer to build their portfolio and capture emotional images in authentic, off-the-beaten-path locations. We would be so grateful to have you join one of our teams and help share the stories of the people we help. Upcoming volunteer team trips include: Better Vision: Brighter Future program (July 9, 2016 -- Tecate, Mxico, August 6-13 -- Guatemala): In low-income countries, many lack access to vision care. Poor eyesight can prevent children from succeeding in school, and adults from earning a living to support their families. IRT's Better Vision-Brighter Future program has responded by sending trained volunteers to rural communities in Guatemala to conduct vision tests, and provide men, women and children with corrective glasses. The Tecate trip if just a one day commitment, the Guatemala trips is a week commitment. Read Pedro's story on our blog, a teenage boy we helped in Guatemala. Military Enrollment Fair (August 13, 2016, San Diego): The Military Enrollment Fair is a one-day event in San Diego, at Serra High School, set up for new military families in the area. As San Diego is a big military town, IRT feels it is important to support local events such as this. IRT has volunteers running operations the day of and underwrites the events. At the fair, families can enroll their kids in school, have lunch and play games. It's a fun day! This is just a one-day commitment. Read this NBC news story for more: One-Day House Build (August 27, 2016, Tijuana, Mexico): Many residents of San Diego's sister city, Tijuana, live in poverty, without access to adequate food, shelter, medical care or educational opportunities. IRT is currently working in the settlement community outside Tijuana called Fuentes Del Valle, building homes, one at a time, for families living in rudimentary structures made from scrap material. In just one day, we build a family in need their very own home. It's a long day, but ends with an emotional ceremony handing over the keys of their new homes to a very deserving family.
